Cakes
The wedding cake has been part of the marriage ceremony ever since medieval times. Originally they were made of wheat which was a symbol of fertility and prosperity. As a relic of once performed fertility rites, this ‘wedding cake’ would have been thrown at the bride.
But breath a sigh of relief, there should be no cake throwing at your wedding! The wedding cake still remains one of the traditional elements of the modern day wedding, but whether to cut or not to cut remains a personal choice
In the past, wedding cakes were made from fruit cake with marzipan and icing as this stored well. Today’s couples have the choice from chocolate cake to carrot cake and profiterole roll towers to pretty iced buns.
The traditional white wedding cake signified purity, but cakes are today iced to the wishes of the bride and groom. Most cakes are designed to blend in with the theme and colour of the wedding, but today’s more outrageous couple may opt for a character cake which has a special meaning for them!
It is important to order your cake as far in as advance as possible especially if you are having fruit cake. Sponge cakes do take less time to make, but still ensure that you have ordered well in advance.
On a tight budget? Why not buy two or three simple white fruit cakes from M&S then arrange them on a C shaped cake stand? A few strands of ivy and a scattering of flowers from your bouquet and there you have a beautiful cake without breaking the bank!
